Kompakt is a sampler-based synthesis application designed to provide users with features for developing digital audio samples and is developed by Native Instruments Company. It features a huge sample library containing samples of a range of acoustic and electronic instruments, and numerous of performance controls. It also enables the user's own patches to be made and samples mapped across the keyboard using a basic drag-and-drop technique, however, it not capable for editing patches; as such Kompakt is best-suited as a performance instrument for playing predefined sample libraries. These Kontakt monolith container files are composed of the digital audio sample data joint with associated patch details, and pieces of data can be separately saved in multiple files enabling users with easier options for using audio samples with other audio sample editing and development applications. The Native Instruments Kontakt software can be set up in Microsoft Windows-based systems to apply support for these NKX files, which are affixed with the .nkx extension. There are also versions of this program that can be utilized in Mac platforms.
