KVocTrain was a previous incarnation of Parley in the current suite of Open Source learning tools from the KDE Education Project. This free educational software uses the "flash card" approach to help students in K-12 classes learn as many words and phrases in English, Chinese or Spanish as they can through interactive tests and games. This program primarily serves as an educator's tool in teaching children aged 3 to 18 years old. However, this tool could be also useful to college students and professionals who work as part-time tutors because it can be deployed through the Internet in a virtual classroom setting. Its current version Parley supports the use of a virtual whiteboard, which the tutor shares with students. While answering oral tests and participating in group discussions, learners can see the words and their translations or definitions flashed onscreen in real time.
The KDE Education Project redesigned a simpler version of its old vocabulary training tool into KWordQuiz, which repeatedly displays the same words and their translated definitions to students in specific intervals. This spaced repetition of words helps young learners memorize more words and phrases commonly used by native speakers. Students master a secondary language more quickly when they clearly understand how the colloquial terms, idiomatic expressions, and forms of speech are used in everyday conversations. In addition, this multi-purpose learning tool also enhances the person's retention and recall of key terms and concepts in other subjects, such as Biology, Music and Literature, and Social Science. KWordQuiz uses KDE technology to open and edit files created by Windows-based WordQuiz and to view the KVTML vocabulary files generated by Parley in KDE 4. These files contain custom word lists that supply questions and answers to multiple choice and fill-in-the-gaps tests.
As part of the KDE Education Project, Parley is a simple learning tool in building a student's vocabulary in multiple languages, such as English, simplified or traditional Chinese, and Spanish. From the online KDE library, teachers download files of vocabulary collections, which are ready-to-use databases of words and phrases that the program needs in making exams or quizzes. These tests include multiple choice exams, fill-in-the blanks types, and essays. They're designed to help students learn to use conjugations, such as 'and' and 'but', in a sentence, compare adjectives and adverbs, and identify synonyms and antonyms. Aside from word quizzes, students have fun learning about a new language through anagrams and games like The Hangman. The software itself is equipped with dockable widgets for easy editing, a drag-and-drop function for rearranging the elements, and a Sonnet spellchecker with a local installation of aSpell, iSpell or Enchant dictionaries.
