Windows Journal is a note taking application, developed by Microsoft and integrated in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, also the Home Premium or superior editions of Windows Vista and Windows 7. It permits the user to make and classify handwritten notes and drawings and to save them in a JNT file, categorized as a data file and commonly known as Windows Journal Files. This type of file can be accessed and viewed using Microsoft Windows Journal Viewer too in particular if the PC does not have a Windows Journal application installed. It is also able to use a regular computer mouse to compose a handwritten note, as well as a graphics tablet or a Tablet PC. At the moment, there can be no third-party applications for use with files created with Windows Journal since the documentation for the JNT format is not available. The current version (v1.5 2005) is available for Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.
