what is a .svw file?

The SpecView software can be used to create and open or view the content of these SpecView Files, which are integrated with encoding specifications implemented for the storage of analytical and scientific biochemical data. These SpecView Files are also implemented with biochemical data compilation standards used for the SVW file format, which means these SpecView Files are stored in the SWV file format using the SpecView application and are affixed with the .svw extension. Ohio State University developed the SVW file format and the SpecView program as an application integrated with a set of features for the simulation of biochemical processes in molecular spectra. Molecular spectra structures, certain parameters and constants are some of the pieces of data that can be stored in these SpecView Files by a SpecView user. Visualized versions of the biochemical and molecular spectra information and details can also be stored in these SpecView Files.

SpecView

SpecView

SpecView is an analysis application and a 1-D spectral visualization that is Java Interactive. Created by Space Telescope Science Institute, it has the capability to read all Hubble Space Telescope instruments’ spectral formats delivered by M AST. It can read extracted HST ACS grism spectrograms as well. SpecView can also read data coming from different instruments in various file formats like FUSE, ISO, FORS and SDSS spectrograms, IUE, data from FITS and ASCII tables. It accepts data from Virtual Observatory and files in SPC Galactic Format. Allows reading and writing data on files IVOA SED Data model format. SpecView was originally created as a multi-purpose spectrum analysis and measurement tool. It was designed to make multiple 1-D spectral data sets that are stored in intricate file formats to become easier to visualize simultaneously. It also has the ability to save its state to files.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .svw files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .svw. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
