Mobile phone devices that use the latest version of the Symbian OS which is Symbian OS 9.1 produce software installer files called the SISX files while the older version of the installer application uses the SIS format. Cell phones supporting the platform and devices of Nokia S60 3rd Edition which is the UIQ 3 platform use the SISX format. The MakeSIS tool is used to create both the SIS and the SISX files as well as the SignSIS utility also signed both of these file extensions. SIS files contain the installation packages saved in a single archive and these can be opened using the Symbian OS. These files are used by the Symbian OS to allow the easy installation of programs to the mobile devices. Mobile devices utilize the Symbian OS for installations and the installer archives used by Symbian are known as SIS files. Well known mobile devices utilize Symbian OS, meaning SIS files are important in almost all mobile devices especially when it comes to installing applications. It requires "makesis" command line tool in generating SIS files and this tool comes with the CreateSIS program. SIS files can be opened by moving them to the suitable mobile device or the device using the Symbian OS but most of the time, SIS files are helpful for setting up themes in an S60 phone. After SIS files are moved, they can be viewed on the mobile device. Mobile phone programs such as the Nokia Suite can open SIS files. This is an application that enables the transfer of data on the computer such as photos, music and videos to the mobile phone and vice versa.
SISContents is software used in unpacking, editing and signing of Symbian 9 SIS packages. It inspects the files that are contained in the package, and checks for certificates it was signed to and view the PKG script which describes the process of on-device installation. The contents of these packages may be edited and signed after the installation. Packages may be edited by modifying the name, vendor, version, type of installation, supported platforms for devices, software dependencies, and the files and components contained in the package may be added, replaced, deleted and change capabilities, UID3, SID of executables. Signed packages show information on certificates, its validity period, issuer, subject, and others, and they may be deleted from the package. It can also view and save installation PKG script, create SIS packages from PKG scripts, read and unpack contents and files from N-Gage packages, and also view, edit and extract images from multibitmap files embedded in the sis packages. Be careful not to rename the extension on .sisx files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.
what is a file extension?
A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .sisx. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
