.rtp File Extension

Developer: Gromacs
File type: Gromacs Residue Topology Parameter File
You're here because you have a file that has a file extension ending in .rtp. Files with the file extension .rtp can only be launched by certain applications. It's possible that .rtp files are data files rather than documents or media, which means they're not meant to be viewed at all.

what is a .rtp file?

A Gromacs residue topology parameter file is generally classified as a data file, and the content of a Gromacs residue topology parameter file includes biochemical data used for molecular research and analysis. The Gromacs software is described as an application with a set of integrated features for the simulation of dynamic molecular and biochemical activities. Residue data is stored in these Gromacs residue topology parameter files, and these data files are integrated with encoding specifications proprietary to Gromacs, which also developed the RTP file format. Molecular base parts represent these residue details that are stored as the content of an RTP file. The data saved in a Gromacs residue topology parameter file may specifically include bonds, atomic structures, dihedrals and angles among other pieces of information about a molecule. The pdb2gmx application is a program from Gromacs that was developed for the conversion of PDB (Protein Data Bank) content into a Gromacs residue topology parameter file. The Groningen Machine for Chemical Simulations term is abbreviated as "Gromacs".

how to open a .rtp file?

Launch a .rtp file, or any other file on your PC, by double-clicking it. If your file associations are set up correctly, the application that's meant to open your .rtp file will open it. It's possible you may need to download or purchase the correct application. It's also possible that you have the correct application on your PC, but .rtp files aren't yet associated with it. In this case, when you try to open a .rtp file, you can tell Windows which application is the correct one for that file. From then on, opening a  .rtp file will open the correct application. GROMACS is a free application for molecular dynamics, simulating Newtonian equations of motion for systems of hundreds to millions of particles. It is mainly designed for biochemical molecules like lipids, nucleic acids and proteins that are made up of complicated bond interactions, but because of the application’s calculating ability including even non-bond interactions [usually dominating simulations], it is also being used in research for non-biological systems like polymers. GROMACS supports all usual algorithms for modern molecular dynamics, but it also has its standout features. It has a lot of algorithmic optimizations like the extraction of the virial calculation from innermost loops over pair interactions and the calculation of inverse square root. GROMACS has parameter files and topologies in clear text format. It performs consistency checking, and clearing of error messages. It will automatically open your compressed files through gzip upon reading. It has no scripting language, providing programs with a simple interface and command line options for output and input files. During simulation process, it will continuously update you the expected time and date of its completion. Its basic trajectory viewer only requires standard X libraries and other visualization applications can read file formats of GROMACS. Any version of GROMACS can run trajectories and input files even when compiled by a different floating-point precision. The software has fully automated topology constructor for proteins and multimeric structures. It has building blocks for 20 standard amino acid residues and modified ones, 4 deoxynucleotide and 4 nucleotide residues, sugars and lipids, special groups such as hemes and small molecules.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .rtp files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .rtp. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
