what is a .q3d file?

The Quest3D Project File is stored in the Q3D format and is affixed with Q3D file extension and is used by Quest 3D. These Q3D files are generally classified as data files that contain all 3D project-related files like CGR files in a single archive. These project files can be published as standalone executable file, web page, Quest 3D Viewer and Installer. A standalone executable file contains all needed files that will unpack and run the project. As for Web page publishing, it requires index.html and createControl.js JavaScript file that allows the 3D program to load in a Web player. With the Quest 3D Viewer, the publisher creates the file to a target directory different from the project directory for CGR files protection. For Installer, it creates a setup program that will create the project on a target machine. The Act-3D Quest3D Viewer software can be used in Microsoft Windows based systems to access and view Q3D files.

Act-3D Quest3D Viewer

Act-3D Quest3D Viewer

Act-3D Quest3D Viewer is a viewer utility program that is essential for accessing and viewing projects published with Quest3D 3.0e or earlier versions. All websites and other projects created with Quest3D 3.5, or newer, as well as standalone executable 3D viewers, do not require this viewing program. Corresponding websites will install the viewer automatically, but also works on a PC with Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Vista. Moreover, it requires DirectX 9.0c, or newer version, 128 MB system memory, a DirectX 9 supporting graphics card, and 200 MB free hard disk space. Quest3D allows the creation of “fly-throughs” in real time with the use of models and other materials, including lighting effects and environmental details. This creates the effect of having a virtual camera with “High Dynamic Range” that simulates real world properties of cameras, including the characteristics of color film, bloom and glare. Materials are simulated with many of their properties, including surface area (smooth, bumpy, etc), colors (vivid and deep), reflections, opacity, and shades.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .q3d files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .q3d. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
