what is a .odm file?

The ODM file extension is used for an Open Document Master Document developed by OASIS. It is an XML file format for word processing, spreadsheets, charts and presentation documents. The creator of ODM, Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards or Oasis was established in 1993 as a trade association of SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) tool vendors aimed at promoting the adoption of SGML. In 1999, a United Nations committee dealing with business standards contacted OASIS to develop a set of new specifications intended for the electronic business. It was named ebXML and was undertaken for three years before both OASIS and UN/CEFACT agreed to divide the work involved. The finished work for ebXML specifications was submitted in 2004 and approved as ISO 15000. Presently there are still many standards that are under development by technical committees of OASIS and carefully undergoing reviews which have gained some criticism from countries who have noticed the slow pace of OASIS.

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .odm. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
