MetaTrader is a web-based platform for real-time delivery of updates about the foreign exchange rates. The software consists of two components. The first part runs from the web server, which is managed by the broker. It securely connects to a client-side program that the broker's client installs in his computer and checks often for streaming updates. Clients also use the desktop application to send their purchase orders and offers to sell. The software is available for installation in Windows only, but a mobile version was released in 2005. The 4th edition has an upgraded version of the MetaQuotes Language 4 (MQL 4) that is used in trade strategies programming. The MetaTrader API allows developers to create compatible mobile apps and third-party software, such as plug-ins that extend the functionality of the client software. This software is also used as a financial management tool that keeps a database of the client's buying and selling activities.
