.dita File Extension

Developer: OASIS
File type: DITA Document File
You're here because you have a file that has a file extension ending in .dita. Files with the file extension .dita can only be launched by certain applications. It's possible that .dita files are data files rather than documents or media, which means they're not meant to be viewed at all.

what is a .dita file?

DITA documents are files encoded in the DITA format, and these DITA files are appended with the .dita extension. "DITA" in the DITA file format and extension stands for Darwin Information Typing Architecture. These DITA files are essentially text files encoded in the plain text format and are integrated with XML-based specifications and standards. The data stored in a DITA document usually includes details of scientific information used for the development and publication of technical materials. These pieces of data saved in a DITA file are structured text content with definitions (also called "Concepts"), how-to details (also known as "Tasks") and citations or facts (also called "References"). The Eclipse software from OASIS can be used by users of Linux systems with the XMLBuddy plug-in to implement support for these DITA files. There are also versions of the Eclipse application for Microsoft Windows and Mac platforms, so users of these operating systems can use the XMLBuddy plug-in, particularly versions developed for their OS, to start authoring, opening and editing the content of these DITA files.

how to open a .dita file?

Launch a .dita file, or any other file on your PC, by double-clicking it. If your file associations are set up correctly, the application that's meant to open your .dita file will open it. It's possible you may need to download or purchase the correct application. It's also possible that you have the correct application on your PC, but .dita files aren't yet associated with it. In this case, when you try to open a .dita file, you can tell Windows which application is the correct one for that file. From then on, opening a  .dita file will open the correct application. Eclipse with XMLBuddy plug-in

Eclipse with XMLBuddy plug-in

XMLBuddy is an Extensive Markup Language editor, which is an Eclipse Integrated Development Environment Plug-in. This is a free (General Public license) software that gives syntax colors and adds templates to new XML document projects and DTD (Document Type Definition) presentations. This software edits XML, XHTML, XSD (with the help of syntax coloring), and DTD, which is a controlled validation software or XML schema. This software can also make DTDs from documents that are in XLM. This software has the feature to update dynamic outline views as well as improved support for automatically detecting XML encoding specifications. This plugin also supports XSLT and RELAX NG Compact syntax, and there is also a default schema that is applicable in the namespace or the root. The auto validation will show errors while the user edits the background parse's base. XMLBuddy can be installed (just like any other Eclipse plug-in) by unzipping it into \eclipse\plugins in the Eclipse directory.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .dita files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .dita. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
