The CPR file extension is a data format associated to Cubase, a music production program. CPR files and Cubase were developed by Steinberg Media Technologies. These files are audio project files that contain data such as audio and MIDI tracks, audio file assets references to audio file assets software instruments, audio effects, and mixer settings. They do not contain the actual audio files for the project. These files are integrated with Digital Audio Workstation application. They serve as a marker to the computer, indicating that the file requires Cubase DAW to be opened. They are created by Cubase version 4 or later, Cubase LE and SX/SL editions. There are backward compatibility issues between different Cubase versions using the CPR format. The Cubase 4 version no longer supported the import of Cubase VST songs and projects. Files in CPR format can be opened with Steinberg Cubase in Mac Os and Microsoft Windows based systems.

Launch a .cpr file, or any other file on your PC, by double-clicking it. If your file associations are set up correctly, the application that's meant to open your .cpr file will open it. It's possible you may need to download or purchase the correct application. It's also possible that you have the correct application on your PC, but .cpr files aren't yet associated with it. In this case, when you try to open a .cpr file, you can tell Windows which application is the correct one for that file. From then on, opening a  .cpr file will open the correct application. Cubase is a music and sound software used as a Digital Audio Workstation for recording, arranging and editing music. The features of the software includes multitrack drum editing and quantizing, multitake composing, tempo detection, and drum replacement. It has VST instruments like the Halion Sonic SE and LoopMash 2, the software supports 64-bit technology runs on Mac OS X and Windows 7. It creates projects, edit MIDI files, raw audio tracks, and even lyrics for presentation in a broad range of formats like musical scores, editing console, event lists, and others. Various tracks may also be mixed into a stereo .wav file format and burned into a CD using the Red Book format, or it can be burned as an .mp3 file format in CD or DVDs, they may also be published and shared on the Web Most of the Cubase versions utilizes dongles for copy protection. This permits license transfer between host machines, but the recent versions of the already uses software based protection. Cubase uses cross-platform USB dongles with a code encryption license from Syncrosoft. Syncrosoft protection permits insertion of Dongle Calls in the software to check dongles and relevant licenses is in the system the functions and features of the software can be accessed.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .cpr files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically.
