what is a .bbs file?
The BBS file extension is appended to a text file containing descriptions, messages and metadata details formatted for BBS programs. This file format was used in Bulletin Board Systems (BBSs), but was later discontinued and abandoned. There are many BBS applications in existence, and most are classified into two kinds, namely Active Software and Classic Software. Active Software is software that is currently in use and supported by various websites, while Classic Software is software that has been discontinued and phased out. BBS files can still be used by certain online BBS networks as files transmitted between members in the form of Private Messages (PMs) and as files used by administrators for entering, removing or modifying certain metadata details of a page in the BBS-powered website, but most Web forums and other social communities on the Internet implement modern BBS applications into their websites. This means BBS files are text files that have been integrated with formatting attributes and text layout characteristics available in old BBS software embedded with support for .bbs files, though most modern BBS applications no longer use .bbs files.

BBS Server Software
BBS Server Software
BBS or Bulletin Board System is a software that connects and logs in to a system using a terminal program. When logged in, users can upload and download data including, read latest news and bulletins, and message other users through e-mail, message boards, and chatting. Access for BBS was originally through a modem connected to a phone line. During the 90’s, BBS could already be accessed through Telnet, packet switched network, or packet radio connection. The Bulletin Board System works just like the traditional bulletin board, only the method of communicating is computerized, this is where the name Computerized Bulletin Board System (CBBS) was derived. BBS was run by the system operator (SysOp) free of charge, while other BBS charged subscription fees for access, and some were operated by businesses for supporting customer needs. The Bulletin board systems was very similar the World Wide Web, social networking services and other programs and sites from the Internet.
Be careful not to rename the extension on .bbs files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.
what is a file extension?
A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .bbs. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
