A Guide to the AUDIT FAILURE Blue Screen of Death Error

The “AUDIT FAILURE” BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) error may appear during the initialization process for Windows XP, Vista, 2000, 2008, and Windows 7 and 8. It means that the system encountered failure while conducting an audit, and has to automatically shutdown to prevent damage and data loss.

This BSOD error may be due to corrupt system files and unstable system registry that resulted from the improper deletion of applications, incomplete program installation, or an incomplete uninstall. In many instances, the BSOD error is caused by the corruption of system and data files due to the activity of malware and improper shutdown procedures.

This BSOD error is also known as “AUDIT_FAILURE” and “STOP 0x00000086“. Some users of Windows XP have reported this error, which normally appears on the screen during the initialization of the system.

To resolve the “AUDIT FAILURE” BSOD error, you can undo recent changes made in the system, such as installation and uninstall of programs and device drivers by reverting the system back to the Last Known Good Configuration. This recovery option allows you to use the latest settings of the computer that worked before you encountered the BSOD error.

To do this, start the computer and press F8 when the message “Please select the operating system to start” appears on the screen. This allows you to access the Windows Advanced Options menu. Use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, then press Enter. This process will remove the changes made in the computer and will revert the computer to the registry and driver configuration that worked prior to encountering the BSOD error.

You can also resolve this BSOD error by using System Restore. To do this, start the computer and select All Programs, and then click on System Tools and System Restore. When a new window opens, choose the option “Restore my computer to an earlier time”, click Next, and follow the prompts and instructions. Reboot the computer when the restoration is completed.
